Things to do indoors in Atlanta when it’s cold outside!

As we get into the cooler months of the year, finding places for kids to burn off energy can become a challenge. Luckily, Atlanta has a plethora of indoor spots to keep the kids active, learn something new, and have fun! Here is a list our our top 7 spots to play indoors in Atlanta!

1. Children's Museum of Atlanta

Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, the Children’s Museum of Atlanta is an indoor interactive play space designed with numerous hands-on exhibits where kids can learn through play, exploring topics from science to art to music. Popular exhibits include the "Fundamentally Food" zone, where kids can learn about healthy eating, and the "Step Up to Science" area, which is perfect for budding scientists. The museum also includes story time, skits and music sing-a-longs as well as seasonal events so make sure to check their calendar to make the most out of your visit!

2. Fernbank Museum of Natural History

Fernbank is one of our favorite places to go with kids in Atlanta for indoor and outdoor fun! Inside, your little ones can check out the massive dinosaur skeletons, explore the “NatureQuest” area with interactive educational activities, or catch a movie on their giant screen theater. Kids will love the hands-on discovery zones, where they can engage with everything from Georgia’s ecosystems to archaeology. If the weather is nice enough to get outside, make sure to check out their unique playground and take a nature walk through the beautiful forest trails!

3. Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium is a top destination for local Atlantans and visitors as well, and for good reason! Located in the heart of Downtown Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the United States. Home to thousands of marine animals across hundreds of species, visitors get the chance to see incredible creatures up close, from whale sharks and beluga whales to manta rays and sea otters. Also, make sure to check out the Dolphin Show while you are there to get to see these magical creatures showing off some of their tricks and learning about the species. Tickets to the dolphin show are included in the price of your Aquarium entrance ticket, but you must make a reservation to the show as seating is limited.

4. Legoland Discovery Center Atlanta

Located in Phipps Plaza in Buckhead, Legoland Discovery Center is the ultimate indoor playground for young Lego fans. There are multiple play zones, including interactive building areas, a pirate-themed play structure, and a mini Lego replica of Atlanta’s skyline. There is also a cool 4D cinema, where favorite Lego characters come to life, and a laser maze for older kids who want a bit of a challenge. They also will sometimes have special events so make sure to check their calendar before you plan your visit!

5. Indoor Playground/Bounce Houses

Atlanta has some really fun indoor playgrounds which include climbing structures, bounce houses, ball pits and other fun play areas to get all the energy out! Some of our favorites include

Tip: Weekdays tend to be less crowded, so plan a weekday visit if possible to avoid the weekend rush.

6. High Museum of Art Kids Programs

The High Museum of Art offers programs for people of all ages, including story and craft times for their smallest visitors. They offer toddler programming designed for children ages fifteen months through three years and their caregivers, Toddler Thursdays and Toddler Saturdays engage children’s creativity. Explore a new theme each month, with related artworks, art projects, and self-guided tours.

7. Little Shop of Stories

The Little Shop of Stories is a charming children’s bookstore located in the heart of cute and quirky Decatur. They offer weekly story times on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Below is more information on their two weekly storytimes, but the bookstore is fun to visit any time! Also check out their website for more information or other events.

Tuesdays at 11 am Storytime usually lasts between 30 and 40 minutes. Tuesdays are a traditional storytime and are perfect for children between the ages of 2 and 6.

Thursday at 11 am Circle Time brings our youngest customers together every Thursday morning. Circle Time includes songs and interactive play, in addition to fun, age-appropriate stories. Thursdays are best suited to children 3 and under. Babies are welcome!
