Frequently Asked Travel Nanny Questions

Have a question we didn’t answer? ~ Contact Us

  • A travel nanny provides support for families while they are traveling outside of the home. They maintain consistent routines wherever you are, prepare meals and snacks, pack and manage travel essentials, entertain children during flights or long drives, and create a comforting, familiar environment in new locations.

If you are hiring a babysitter for your Atlanta visit, our vetted local vacation nannies step in to provide flexible, attentive childcare during your trip. They can support your family throughout your stay, allowing you to enjoy sightseeing activities and dining experiences with peace of mind, knowing your children are engaged, safe, and cared for every step of the way.

  • Our search and matching process for a travel nanny takes 1-4 weeks, depending on your family’s schedule and specific requirements.

  • We use a variety of resources to connect with highly qualified nannies, including referrals, our online job board, local and national nanny events, nanny conferences, online nanny groups, social media, and local job fairs. For travel nanny positions, we prioritize candidates with adaptability to new environments and the professionalism required to provide consistent, high-caliber care while on the road.

  • We begin with an in-depth agency interview to review each candidate’s experience, qualifications, and alignment with agency expectations, including their ability to provide safe and adaptable care while traveling.

All nannies must meet the following minimum requirements:

    • At least 3 years of professional childcare experience

    • CPR and First Aid certified

    • Legal eligibility to work in the U.S.

    • Valid U.S. driver’s license

    • Non-smoking

    • Minimum of 3 professional references

Once offered a position, candidates undergo a comprehensive 7-year background check, including criminal history, Social Security verification, driving record, and sexual offender registry screening. Additionally, we perform thorough social media and online research to ensure each candidate meets our high standards.

  • Travel nanny schedules can be flexible depending on your needs. Families pay hourly for all working hours, including travel time. Overtime applies if the nanny works more than 40 hours in a week, and downtime between shifts should be clearly planned. For more details, read our full article on traveling with a nanny.

  • Most families review 1–3 profiles of candidates we have carefully selected for your travel nanny position. Our goal is to simplify the process, presenting only the most qualified, experienced, and travel-ready nannies who align with your family’s routines, preferences, and unique needs.

  • We provide families with a sample contract template tailored for travel nanny positions. We guide you through the process, helping answer any questions and ensuring all details are clearly outlined for a smooth, professional agreement.

  • The average rate for an experienced travel nanny typically ranges from $30–$35+/hour, depending on the nanny’s experience, certifications, number of children, travel duration, and specific job duties. Rates for travel nannies, especially temporary vacation cover, tend to be slightly higher than standard in-home care to reflect the additional responsibility and flexibility required.

  • This depends on how many hours your travel nanny works with you and whether you go over the IRS threshold for what is considered a household employee. Your Happy Nest can connect you with trusted payroll partners who can provide guidance and help ensure compliance with all applicable tax requirements.

  • Sleeping hours are often paid at a flat overnight rate, but if the nanny is sharing a room and responsible for overnight care, all overnight hours must be paid. Some families opt for a flat daily travel rate, agreed upon in advance. For more details, read our full article on traveling with a nanny.
