What Is a Typical Holiday Bonus for a Nanny?
A Guide for Families in Atlanta, Charleston & Charlotte
The holiday season is the perfect time to show your nanny how much you appreciate the care, support, and love they bring into your home all year long. Many nannies go above and beyond during the holidays—helping with school parties, holiday crafts, baking projects, and keeping this season magical and stress-free for your family. A thoughtful “thank you” goes a long way!
How Much Is a Standard Holiday Bonus for a Nanny?
One of the most common questions we receive at Your Happy Nest Nanny Agency is: “What is a typical holiday bonus for a nanny?”
While a bonus is never something a nanny should expect, it is standard in the nanny industry to give a holiday bonus equivalent to 1–2 weeks of the nanny’s regular pay.
Newer nanny (with family less than a year): Typically on the lower end
Long-term nanny (with family several years): Often on the higher end
Giving a bonus earlier in the holiday season is a kind gesture—it allows your nanny to use the funds toward gifts, travel, or holiday expenses.
Meaningful Ways to Show Appreciation
In addition to (or instead of) a monetary bonus, families often include a heartfelt touch:
A handwritten thank-you card
A note or drawing from the children
A small gift from the kids such as:
A handmade ornament
A framed photo
A small photo book
These personal touches can mean just as much as the bonus itself.
Creative Bonus Alternatives if Money Is Tight
If a full 1–2 week bonus isn’t financially possible this year, there are still wonderful ways to express gratitude:
Airline miles for travel home or a future vacation
A weekend getaway if you own a second home
A paid day off paired with a spa treatment
Gift cards for something you know they’ll love
While these thoughtful ideas are appreciated, most nannies still prefer a financial bonus when possible, based on the feedback we regularly receive.
If Your Bonus Amount Has Changed
If you’ve offered a higher bonus in past years but can’t match it this season, open communication is key. Letting your nanny know ahead of time helps prevent confusion or disappointment.
Cash vs. Payroll: What You Should Know
Some families choose to give a cash bonus. If the bonus is paid through your payroll service, it will be taxable income for your nanny—something to keep in mind as you plan their holiday gift.
