Tips for a Positive Social Media Presence!

Tips for a social media presence.png

The team at Your Happy Nest is excited to share some tips on how to manage your social media accounts to help present yourself in the best light to your current and future employers. One of the first things a prospective employer or nanny agency will do is search for you on social media and often that is the first impression they will get of you.

You want to make sure your profile is either set to private or will represent you in the most positive light. Not only does your social media profile represent you, but once you are employed by a family it represents them as well and also represents Your Happy Nest (if you are one of our registered nannies or sitters).

Many of us see social media as an outlet, and a way to tell the world who we are personally ... but there is a danger in sharing TOO much.

Because of that, we want to offer you some advice on how to get your social media accounts to work FOR you, not against you.

Start With These Tips:

  • Have a polished, professional-looking photo as your main picture.

  • Share uplifting, positive, and funny posts.

  • Share photos of your volunteer work, outdoor adventures, and other positive life stories.

Things to Avoid:

  • Strong political statements or rants. This is very important- especially with the current political climate. It is best to keep things neutral!

  • Photos of excessive partying/drinking alcohol. It’s fine to show yourself drinking a glass of wine with dinner but excessive partying photos are a no-no!

  • "Sexy" photos. This should go without saying but you’d be surprised at how many sexy photos we see when reviewing nanny’s social media profiles.

  • Excessive selfies

  • Foul language. Remember a family is hiring you to be a role model and positive influence in their child’s life!

And MOST importantly: Never post photos of your charges without permission from the parents, and never share your location while you are working.  It should be discussed during the hiring process and written into your contract as to whether you have permission to post pictures of your charges online. Some families are completely comfortable with this and others are not- but it should always be discussed!

It is a good rule of thumb to just keep your profile private at all times. You don’t want a photo from 10 years ago to show up on your profile that reflects different ideas or values that you have now!
