Screening and Vetting Nannies: At a minimum, your family (or the agency) should conduct a full background check, including criminal record, driving record, social security verification and sexual offendors registry. At Your Happy Nest, we also require three childcare references that we call and ask detailed questions to. Unfortunately, we have been given fake references so it is important to be diligent in making sure facts line up and you are asking detailed and thorough questions. We have a list of questions we ask that is our “secret sauce” and really dig into reference calls. It is also important to do a full social media and google screening of any potential nanny as well.

When reviewing resumes and profiles, it is important to evaluate experience, qualifications, and certifications and make sure they are in line with your family’s parenting style and values.

Interviews and Trial Periods:

When interviewing nannies, conducting effective interviews to gauge a nanny's suitability is important. At Your Happy Nest, we provide all parents with a list of questions to ask and topics that are important to discuss during the family-nanny interview.

We also require implementing a trial day (or a couple of trial days) to give you and the potential nanny an opportunity to get to know one another better to make sure it is a fit before putting a contract in place. A trial day would be like a training day for a potential candidate that you are seriously considering making an offer to and you typically do a trial day to your top 1-2 choices, not every nanny you interview.

Nanny Contracts and Legal Considerations:

If we could give you one piece of advice that we highly advise (and require of all families working with Your Happy Nest) it would be to put a detailed contract into place. The purpose of a nanny contract is to outline job responsibilities, work hours, vacation time, and compensation but also other factors that may come up that you might not think about until they are an issue such as an inclimate weather clause, whether you are comfortable with your nanny posting pictures of your child on social media, or how your nanny will be reimbursed for mileage or expenses. All families who work with Your Happy Nest are given a sample contract to use.

It is also important to include legal considerations such as taxes, insurance, and employment regulations.
