Your Happy Nanny October 2016- Kristin Dube

Our Your Happy Nanny for October 2016 is Kristin Dube who lives in Charleston, SC. Kristin just recently relocated to the Charleston area from New Hampshire and is looking for a long term full time nanny position. Kristin has also become one of our go-to fill in nannies for daytime and night time babysitting and we always receive very positive feedback on her! Please read her bio below and let us know if you'd like to schedule an interview with Kristin or to book her as a sitter! 13737605_10154394461838552_411643541701943073_o

What part of Charleston do you live in?

I recently moved to the Ladson area.

Where are you from originally?

I’m a New Hampshire native. I grew up about an hour outside of Boston. So I’m a New England sports fan to the core.

What language(s) do you speak?

I speak English, and only a minimal amount of French..but I do speak fluent “toddler.”

How long have you been a nanny?

I’ve been nannying for 6 years, and I’ve been babysitting for many more years than that.

Do you have a favorite age and why?

I really enjoy 9-18 months old. I’ve had such great experiences witnessing the growth and development in those months. There are so many connections being made as a baby begins to really engage with their environment on a new level. I feel like the pride and happiness a child shows as they learn to master new tasks is an amazing thing to be a part of.

Funniest nanny moment:

One time I showed up on a Monday morning and let myself in(as usual). After a few minutes with no kids or parents in sight, I realized that something didn’t seem right. Within ten minutes I realized that it was Memorial Day and not only did I have the day off, but it was a paid holiday too. I awkwardly let the family know about my mistake and we had a good laugh over it.

Favorite thing about being a nanny:

I’d say my favorite part of being a nanny is the purpose that it gives me. I gain so much from being able to help support and love someone’s little one as they grow and learn about the world around them.

What is your strongest quality as a nanny?

I think that life should be full of activities and opportunities to learn whether it’s through singing, dancing, activities, or trial and error. I pride myself on finding new ways to teach and encourage children to be creative and curious about how and why things work the way they do. Encouraging that sort of growth and development is something I think I am naturally good at.

Favorite place to bring children on an outing in Charleston:

Since I just moved here, I don’t have much experience going on outings here, but back in New Hampshire we always enjoyed going to the beach and doing anything outdoors.

Favorite activities to do with kids on a rainy day:

Rainy days can be perfect for baking or lots of messy arts and crafts. They’re also a great excuse to get some new library books and build “reading nest” to snuggle up inside of. All you need is some sheets to hang up, and plenty of stuffed animals and pillows.

What is your educational background?

I’ve attended a Christian University in Illinois, but transferred back east to take night classes while I nannied full time. I plan on transferring my credits to a school down here so I can finish my degree while I continue working with kids.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Lately I’ve been trying to perfect the art of baking home made bread. Though I’ll never be as good as my mom, I’m loving the challenge. I also love to take out my DSLR to find something new and interesting to take a photo of. I’ve always enjoyed the art of capturing an image in a way that speaks for itself. I especially love taking children’s portraits and engagement photos.

When are you available to start a new position?

I’m working as a fill in nanny or a date night sitter while I wait for the right full time position, so my availability is very open and flexible. I just really want to find a family I can connect to and develop a great relationship with.

Sitter Spotlight Charleston- Casey Long

Casey Long Meet Casey Long! Our Spotlight Sitter featured this month in Charleston. Casey is one of our go-to sitters we us for nights and weekend babysitting jobs. Casey is a Junior at the College of Charleston and is also pursuing a degree in nursing and plans to go to PA school. We always get great feedback from families who use Casey and we are happy she is part of the Your Happy Nest Charleston babysitting team!

Where are you from originally?

I was raised in Catawba, SC, a small town just outside of Charlotte, NC.

Do you speak any other languages besides English?

I am partially fluent in French and know a little bit of American Sign Language!

How long have you been working with children?

Honestly… as long as I can remember. When I was in elementary school, I rode to school with my

neighbor. Every morning, I walked over to my neighbor’s house to helped get the younger child ready for

daycare (changed out of pajamas, changed diaper, fed breakfast, etc.) while the mother helped get her

daughter ready for school.

Do you have a favorite age and why?

I absolutely love babies! Honestly, who doesn’t? They are so interesting to watch because they are

experimenting with their senses and learning about everything they come into contact with. In college, I

took at Motor Learning and Development course, and I learned all about the progression of gross and

fine motor development in babies. For me, it has been amazing to learn so much about babies and then

be able to actually apply my knowledge when caring for children.

Funniest babysitting moment:

Last summer, I worked at a sleep-away camp for kids in California. Many of the campers were from all

over the world. During one particular session, I had 3 young girls from China. None of the girls spoke

English and they were sent to our camp in order to be fully immersed in American culture. One evening

at Dinner, I was sitting beside one of the girls and she began frantically waving her hands and squealing

in Chinese! I had absolutely no idea what was going on! She was pointing to her mouth with one hand

and was holding something with a closed first in her other hand. She grabbed my hand and dropped a

wad chewed up food into the palm of my hand and opened her mouth to show me that she had lost a

tooth! I immediately shot up from my seat and grabbed her hand to rush her to a nearby bathroom. We

ran into the bathroom (while I still had this wad of food in my hand), and I cupped my other hand

underneath the sink faucet to demonstrate her how to rinse some of the blood out of her mouth. Now

imagine: this child does not speak English and this was one of the first teeth she had ever lost, so she was

just as shocked by the situation as I was. I cupped my hand underneath the faucet to catch a handful of

water to show her how to rinse her mouth out… but for whatever reason, she insisted upon sipping the

water from my hand instead of her own! At this point, I finally decided to take a look at this wad of food

that I had been holding for a few minutes now. In the center of the wad, I found a small tooth! When we

left the bathroom, I found a zip lock bag to put her tooth in to take home and later that night, I snuck a

small prize underneath her pillow.

Favorite thing about working with kids:

They are so imaginative, creative, and curious! They want to try everything! They are eager and do

everything so wholeheartedly.

Favorite place to bring children on an outing in Charleston:

I love the outdoors, and especially the water; so naturally, I picked a destination that encompasses both

of those! There is a beautiful little waterfront park off of Harbor View Road, called Demetre Park,

formally known as “Sunrise Park”. There are tons of neat things to see/do there – everything from

collecting shells to watching tiny fiddler crabs. It’s also a great picnic spot and admission is free!

Favorite activities to do with kids on a rainy day:

I live downtown, so I absolutely love bringing children to the SC aquarium! If you have not been, I highly

recommend going! There are great exhibits, hourly shows, and a touch tank!

What is your educational background?

I am currently a junior at the College of Charleston. I am an Exercise Science major and Public Health

minor. After graduating from CofC, I am looking to apply to PA school.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to cook, to spend time at the beach, and attempt crafts/d.i.y. projects off of Pinterest.

Grocery Bag Gingerbread People Craft

Gingergirls With the holidays quickly approaching, I'm sure many of you, parents and nannies, are thinking, "How am I going to keep the children occupied all winter vacation long?" Well have no fear, Your Happy Nest is here...to provide you with easy, at-home crafts that your children are sure to love!

First up are these adorable Grocery Bag Gingerbread People. My nanny children are busy learning about shapes, so we decorated ours with just that. However, you children might love using cotton balls, felt, or other materials you have hanging around the house.

Here's a quick step-by-step tutorial for making you very own Grocery Bag Gingerbread Person! Have fun!

  1. Gather your materials. You shouldn't need many! We used a paper grocery bag, scissors, markers, glue, and construction paper.

2. Cut open your grocery bag, so you can draw a gingerbread person on the side without print. Cut out your gingerbread person. We did all gingerbread girls because my nanny children are both little girls.

3.  Decorate your gingerbread person! We reviewed our shapes as we decorated our people. The girls loved it!

4. Hang your gingerbread person in a spot for the whole family to enjoy!

Your Happy Nest is now serving Cincinnati, OH!

Macielookingatcamera

Your Happy Nest is excited to announce we are now serving the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Metropolitan Area!  Meet Kristina, our placement provider in Cincinnati, OH.  Kristina has been working with our Atlanta branch since July of 2014.  Kristina recently decided to relocate back to Cincinnati to be near family and lifelong friends.  Take a look at Kristina's bio below and please spread the exciting news to families and nannies who live in the greater Cincinnati area.

FullSizeRenderI am excited to annouce that Your Happy Nest is expanding to my hometown of Cincinnati, OH!  I was first introduced to Your Happy Nest when I volunteered to be an organizer for the National Nanny Training Day event in Atlanta that was hosted in 2014.  While organizing the event I became acquainted with the staff at Your Happy Nest and felt they were a quality type of agency that supports both the nannies and families needs!  Before working with the agency I was a profesional nanny in the Cincinnati area for 8 years and in 2010 I accepted a nanny position in Atlanta, GA.  My favorite part of being a nanny is the special relationships that I am able to develop with the children I am caring for.  Working with Your Happy Nest has given me the opportunity to help others find the same wonderful experience I enjoy so much.  In August of 2013 I welcomed my first child just 8 minutes before my birthday.  As a new mother I can relate to a parents needs and concerns when hiring someone to care for their child.  As a placement provider my goal is to take the stress out of finding an exceptional nanny so that parents can go to work with a peace of mind knowing their child will be in great hands.

Your Happy Nanny May 2015- Jessica Driskell

Jessica Driskell

Meet Jessica Driskell, our featured nanny for the month of May 2015! Jessica is a teacher during the school year and is looking for a summer nanny position or fill in nanny jobs over the summer. Jessica teaches Technology at Frey Elementary School grades K-5. Previously to being a teacher, Jessica was a full time nanny through our agency.

What part of Atlanta do you live in?

I am currently living in the Smyrna/Vinings area

Where are you from originally?

I am originally from Marietta, GA

How long have you been a nanny?

I began nannying in 2003 and have been fortunate enough to maintain great relationships with the families I’ve worked with.

What is your educational background?

I have my bachelor’s degree in Public Speaking from Georgia State University and I am pursuing my master’s degree in Special Education there as well.

Do you have a favorite age and why? I really enjoy working with elementary aged children. I love seeing them discover all there is to growing, learning and life. That, coupled with the hilarious things children say during those years are the most exciting thing to witness.

Funniest nanny moment:

The funniest moment I’ve had as a nanny was when I was playing Britney Spears on my phone while out on a walk with a little boy and he stopped and said emphatically “Enough! Cut it! I can’t take this girl anymore. We need a break.” I, of course, turned the song off and couldn’t help but laugh at my having been scolded for my taste in music by a five year old!

Favorite thing about being a nanny:

The best part about being a nanny is the bond that is built not only between the children and me but, also with the parents. They truly become family.

What is your strongest quality as a nanny?

My strongest quality as a nanny is definitely my humor. I tend to bring humor into most situations.

Favorite place to bring children on an outing in Atlanta:

Favorite activities to do with kids on a rainy day:

I love going out and playing with the kids in the puddles. It’s typically something that is discouraged, but letting out that energy is fun and with the appropriate attire (rain coat, goulashes, etc.) it’s quite enjoyable!

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I love going out to Mexican restaurants with my friends. It’s my absolute favorite cuisine!

When are you available to start a new position?

I will be available to start a summer position on June 1 or to do fill in work during that time.
