Sitter Spotlight Charleston- Casey Long

Casey Long Meet Casey Long! Our Spotlight Sitter featured this month in Charleston. Casey is one of our go-to sitters we us for nights and weekend babysitting jobs. Casey is a Junior at the College of Charleston and is also pursuing a degree in nursing and plans to go to PA school. We always get great feedback from families who use Casey and we are happy she is part of the Your Happy Nest Charleston babysitting team!

Where are you from originally?

I was raised in Catawba, SC, a small town just outside of Charlotte, NC.

Do you speak any other languages besides English?

I am partially fluent in French and know a little bit of American Sign Language!

How long have you been working with children?

Honestly… as long as I can remember. When I was in elementary school, I rode to school with my

neighbor. Every morning, I walked over to my neighbor’s house to helped get the younger child ready for

daycare (changed out of pajamas, changed diaper, fed breakfast, etc.) while the mother helped get her

daughter ready for school.

Do you have a favorite age and why?

I absolutely love babies! Honestly, who doesn’t? They are so interesting to watch because they are

experimenting with their senses and learning about everything they come into contact with. In college, I

took at Motor Learning and Development course, and I learned all about the progression of gross and

fine motor development in babies. For me, it has been amazing to learn so much about babies and then

be able to actually apply my knowledge when caring for children.

Funniest babysitting moment:

Last summer, I worked at a sleep-away camp for kids in California. Many of the campers were from all

over the world. During one particular session, I had 3 young girls from China. None of the girls spoke

English and they were sent to our camp in order to be fully immersed in American culture. One evening

at Dinner, I was sitting beside one of the girls and she began frantically waving her hands and squealing

in Chinese! I had absolutely no idea what was going on! She was pointing to her mouth with one hand

and was holding something with a closed first in her other hand. She grabbed my hand and dropped a

wad chewed up food into the palm of my hand and opened her mouth to show me that she had lost a

tooth! I immediately shot up from my seat and grabbed her hand to rush her to a nearby bathroom. We

ran into the bathroom (while I still had this wad of food in my hand), and I cupped my other hand

underneath the sink faucet to demonstrate her how to rinse some of the blood out of her mouth. Now

imagine: this child does not speak English and this was one of the first teeth she had ever lost, so she was

just as shocked by the situation as I was. I cupped my hand underneath the faucet to catch a handful of

water to show her how to rinse her mouth out… but for whatever reason, she insisted upon sipping the

water from my hand instead of her own! At this point, I finally decided to take a look at this wad of food

that I had been holding for a few minutes now. In the center of the wad, I found a small tooth! When we

left the bathroom, I found a zip lock bag to put her tooth in to take home and later that night, I snuck a

small prize underneath her pillow.

Favorite thing about working with kids:

They are so imaginative, creative, and curious! They want to try everything! They are eager and do

everything so wholeheartedly.

Favorite place to bring children on an outing in Charleston:

I love the outdoors, and especially the water; so naturally, I picked a destination that encompasses both

of those! There is a beautiful little waterfront park off of Harbor View Road, called Demetre Park,

formally known as “Sunrise Park”. There are tons of neat things to see/do there – everything from

collecting shells to watching tiny fiddler crabs. It’s also a great picnic spot and admission is free!

Favorite activities to do with kids on a rainy day:

I live downtown, so I absolutely love bringing children to the SC aquarium! If you have not been, I highly

recommend going! There are great exhibits, hourly shows, and a touch tank!

What is your educational background?

I am currently a junior at the College of Charleston. I am an Exercise Science major and Public Health

minor. After graduating from CofC, I am looking to apply to PA school.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to cook, to spend time at the beach, and attempt crafts/d.i.y. projects off of Pinterest.

Your Happy Nanny- Lindsay Faulkner

Your Happy Nanny for March 2015- Lindsay Faulkner Meet Lindsay Faulkner, our March 2015 Your Happy Nanny of the month! Lindsay is a career nanny with over 20 years of experience in childcare. She majored in Fine Art at the University of GA and loves to share her artistic talent with children.  She also majored in Early Childhood Education at GA State and has her Montessori Teachers Certificate.  Lindsay lives in Woodstock and is looking for a full time position to begin on March 30 or later. Contact us today if you are interested in scheduling an interview with Lindsay!

What part of Atlanta do you live in?

I live in the city of Woodstock, just north of Atlanta.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in Oklahoma, but moved at an early age to Maryland and then at the age of 10 we moved to Atlanta where I have lived most of my life, except for a few years on St. Simons Island and then in California. I consider Atlanta my home.

What language(s) do you speak?

I speak English and Baby Sign.

How long have you been a nanny?

I have been a professional career Nanny for over 20 years.

Do you have a favorite age and why?

Oh! Gosh! I can’t say that I have a favorite age. There is something very special and unique at every age, from the warmth and sweet smell of a newborn, to the curiosity and thrills of discovery as a toddler conquers each new milestone, to the preschooler and school aged child as they begin to explore their newfound independence all the way to the challenges of adolescence. There is something to be enjoyed at each and every age and stage of development! Choosing a favorite age would be like choosing a favorite child!

Funniest nanny moment:

I love Elmo! And I love reading to children. One of this little girl’s favorite books was Elmo Loves You. I had read it to her too many times to count. One day as I was changing her diaper and we were chattering back and forth I asked, “Who loves you?” (I expected her answer to be Lindsay.) However with absolutely no hesitation at all she answered, “Elmo!” Well of course!

What is your strongest quality as a nanny?

I would have to say patience. Some things just can’t be rushed! Especially when dealing with children.

Favorite place to bring children on an outing in Atlanta:

There are so many wonderful places to visit in and around Atlanta it’s hard to choose. But if you’re looking for something indoors I would have to say The Center for Puppetry Arts. And if you’re looking for something outdoors I love packing lunch and just going to a park. Atlanta is full of wonderful parks.

Favorite activities to do with kids on a rainy day:

I was an Art Major, so of course Arts and Crafts. But I also love to do cool science experiments!

What is your educational background?

I first attended University of Georgia as a Fine Arts Major. After working as a teacher’s assistant at a Montessori school I went on to get my Montessori Teacher Certification at The Montessori Institute of Atlanta. After teaching several years and I attended Georgia State University majoring in Early Childhood Education. I completed all of my course work and my first quarter of practice teaching and due to work was unable to finish the last 2 quarters of practice teaching. I did continue part time at Georgia State once again majoring in Art. Since then I have continued my education taking classes and workshops relative to childcare. I recently completed Newborn Specialist Training.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to spend my free time with family and friends. I am always working on some project, whether it be refinishing furniture, sewing or planting flowers in my yard. I also love a good book…both fiction and
